Vaisala Introduces Innovative New Visibility and Present Weather Sensors

Vaisala, the global leader in the environmental and industrial measurements, announced today the seventh generation of visibility and present weather sensors. Vaisala Forward Scatter FD70 Series utilizes innovative technology setting a new standard in precipitation identification, quantification and visibility determination accuracy.

Vaisala Forward Scatter FD70 Series consists of two product models: FD71 visibility sensor and FD71P present weather sensor. FD70 Series can function stand-alone, interoperate as an integral part of Vaisala systems, and additionally work with different third-party systems. The main customers for the new products are meteorological institutes and airports. Deliveries are estimated to start in Q2/2019.

Significant Enhancement of Drizzle, Freezing Rain, Hail, and Ice Pellet Identification

"FD70 Series is based on innovative integration of forward scatter and optical disdrometer technologies, which enables reliable detection of even the smallest droplet. FD70 Series has superior precipitation type identification capability, and it enhances precipitation intensity and accumulation measurements. The new products provide accurate visibility measurement with proven calibration traceability and reporting range of up to 100 kilometers," said Tommi Linna, Product Manager for FD70 Series.

Improving Airport Safety and Operational Efficiency

Efficient airport utilization and bringing passengers home safely are fundamental needs of any airport today. Vaisala has more than 40 years of experience in airport weather products and continues investing significantly in future development.

"FD70 Series as part of the Vaisala AviMet® System improves airport safety and operational efficiency. It is the best-in-class visibility and present weather sensor and a key component for runway visual range (RVR) calculations where accuracy matters," continued Linna.

FD71P is an ICAO compliant sensor with proven calibration traceability. It incorporates reliable precipitation detection and enhanced freezing rain identification. There is potential for significant savings by keeping up the airport capacity without compromising safety.
